Maria,
Well, not the best situation, but here's some
possibilities to try. You'll surely get some
more good ideas from other people too. I do take
my (sulcata) tortoise in the van, he rides in
a cat carrier very well with a big towel. He's
used to this and does fine. There's a pic. of him
in it on my site, under "My Tortoise". Also a
pic. of a portable pen, a 2 ft. high folding
metal pen. That might be something for you,
for park trips to protect the tort from curious
hands or even nosey dogs on too-long leashes.
Watch that he doesn't eat any poisonous plants,
or other junk (gum, cigarette butts) just basically
watch him constantly! (Like a 2-year old! lol)
Maybe a friend has a garden he could make visits
to.
If you must keep him in a 20 gallon for now, then
tape some construction paper to 3 sides of it on
the outside, to make it seem more solid, and reduce
"glass stress". Make sure he has hides. Anything
from a cardboard box, to wood hides you buy in pet
shops, as long as it's safe (won't tip on him, or
allow him to tip over trying to climb it).
Lots of tortoises seem to like to nestle in hay
piles, you can see the one I formed on Teddy's site
also.
Consider getting a plastic little kiddie swimming
pool for a "play pen" , be cautious about letting
him run around on the floor, if it's not drafty,
make sure it's tort safe (electrical cords, etc..
again, think 2-year old!). You could use this
to feed him, or give him his soakings in a small
container inside this. If that's too big, look
at the rubbermaid section of the stores, there
are square boxes all sizes. (I have one designed
for "wreath storage", it's a nice size.)
Also start considering growing some plants for
him to eat and just to place in his playpen with
him maybe.
Some people say that their tortoises are shy or
hiding a lot, mine does very well with attention,
so it's maybe individual. You don't want to stress
him, but if they do well with attention, they're
so much fun. (You'll be planning your move to
place with a yard soon enough! lol) niki
