It's a good sign that you're being reflective -- it *is* a committment. But if you do a little research before hand, and take some time to gather the things that you will need to make your tortoise healthy and happy before you actually purchase the tortoise, you will feel calm and prepared. Yes, there is some initial investment, but it's not unmanageable. And yes, there is a little daily care, but you will adjust to a schedule, and it is really not that much time.

Again, I suggest you look into a smaller tort-- maybe a Hermann's or a Greek. (and since they prefer dry conditions, you do not have to work to keep the humidity level up as you do with redfoots) But reading about the different tortoises and their different requirements can be part of your research. There is a lot of interesting information on the web (that Beasley page has many good links). A good and inexpensive book to start with is The Complete Idiot's Guide to Turtles & Tortoises.

So just take your time and learn. It may start to seem less daunting to you.

Good luck!

Jen B
