I couldn't agree with you more, but I fear you are wasting your breath. I have been trying to explain the principle of market creation to people for a long time, but no one seems able to understand it. When attempting to explain that purchasing and dealing in wild caught animals perpetuates the trade, I get dumb stares, explanations like "but I didn't catch it; it had already been caught," as well as open hostility similar to that expressed by EJ in his response. But with respect to the Spider tort situation, the problem is further complicated by suspect practices abroad. Apparently, too many CITES permits were "accidently" granted. The fact that all caught specimens were instantly snapped up over here has given rise to thousands more permits being issued for next year. Sadly, the wild pyxis populations are being dessimated, and individuals purchasing the poor animals here don't even know how to care for them. However, knowledgable individuals who care are attempting to help the tortoises in the only possible way (given corrupt officials abroad and unscrupulous dealers in the US); they are right now in the process of creating caresheets for these tortoises. The sheets will appear on the Tortoise Trust web site shortly. At least the torts who are purchased will then stand a fighting chance of being well cared for. If you can think of an effective way to combat these practices, please let me know, and I'll help any way I can. But I don't think people can be badgered or insulted into acting ethically. I'd have more respect for them if eliciting decency were that simple.
: Just when we though this onslaught may have ended, here comes a few more dealers who will sell anything to make a few bucks. Go sell real estate, used cars, stock options, shoes, anything, but give please give the already beleagured Pyxis populations a freaking break. How much are you making at this point? Are you all this poor? Can't you see that supply pressure and market saturation has driven the prices to where they now are? Consider if you whores would not buy any more the exporters would ship anymore and any capitalist who attended one day of econ 101 would figure out the price in time would increase as well your profits and here's a bit of rocket science, your risk would diminish because fewer animals means less capital investment as well less mortaltiy risk. Not to mention you conscienceless pigs may actually show a little class.
