:Hi Matt:
I think that Russian tortoises are one of the best tortoises around-- but I'm biased!
They are very hardy, able to take extremes in temperature. Although they don't do well with damp conditions. I think they are very friendly and out-going I have never been bitten by one, I have been pooed on many times. It seemes to be a very effective method to get you to leave the tortoise alone-- Leave me alone or I'll poo on you!
Russian tortoises get about 8" long, and that is measuring straight along the shell not over the top. Femails can and do get bigger than males.
Both males and females like to dig and like to climb- so make sure you have them in a secure enclosure or they will escape.
Food is almost exclusively green leafy vegetables and grasses, occasionally some fruit.
I feed Skippy a mixed salad containing as many different greens as possible along with chopped Timothy Hay and occasional cactus pads, rember to sprinkle some reptile vitamines with calcium lightly on the food. Do not fedd the tortoise any cabbage, cabbage relatives, iceburg lettuce, or spinich. These can cause problems if the tortoise eats to much.
The price is pretty cheep for a tortoise but that is because they are caught in the wild and imported. Because of this many tortoises have parasites and other cooties, so it is best to take the tortoise to a vet and have a complete check-up. And if the petstore tells you that the tortoises were born in captivity they are probably lying! Trust me, I work at a pet store!
You should probably expect to pay around $60 for a wild-caught and $100+ for a true captive born.
If you have any other questions E-mail me.
