i wouldn't worry about softening the ground too much (unless it's really hard clay) they are very good diggers and have strong legs for such. just be sure she has enough substrate to dig in. they usually lay thier eggs about 3/4 the lenght of thier carapace deep. give extra depth to be sure she doesn't hit bottom. keep a close eye on her around early evening-dusk as this will be when she will lay. do not disturb her until she is done and starting to bury the eggs or she may not lay them and become egg bound. after she is done, remove the eggs and place them in an appropriate incubator (if you need more info on this, i can give you design plans) if they are fertile, you will have some baby tortoises in about 5 months, give or take a bit.
good luck :)

: About a month ago, my pair of yellow foots mated successfully. (instead of his normal failed attempt) The female, who is normally very shy, is constantly walking around and always out and about, even if I am in the yard. Normally, she disappears if she sees me. I am pretty sure she is wanting to lay. They are kept in a large brick yard that has large rock gardens. I put more dirt in the rock garden today to make it more "digable" for her. If she does indeed lay, should I leave the eggs in the ground or remove? What would give a better chance at a baby? I am hesitant to leave in the ground because I found a baby box turtle shell this morning that something ate! If I do remove from the ground, how do I do this and what do I do with the egg ? I live in Key West, so it is warm year round.
: Thank you in advance.
