I agree with Heather's post. Her arguments are good.
I've gone around with this several times also, as
I would like to get more tortoises also.
Even the same type make me nervous, if I got another
sulcata, I would be heart-broken if something happened
to my Teddy as a result of getting another sulcata.
On the other hand, I know also that many people
have lots of tortoises with out any apparent
problems.
Plus, in my yard where Teddy is most of the day,
there have been box turtles known to wander by,
and there's a giant snapper in the back yard,
though he stays in the water most of the time.
But all day long, birds, squirrels, and skinks,
frogs, anoles, bugs and other things are outside
there with him. So he's far from living in
a bubble.
Certainly in the wild there's mixing, but with
a large space (acres not square feet), it doesn't
seem to be a problem. Maybe the close quarters
are generally stressful and may contribute to
risks that may not play any role in the wild.
