:I prefer to use a sterile potting soil mix mixed with some sand and larger rocks. The tortoises' toenails wear down nicely as the animals dig around. If you pack the mixture well there is less chance of the tortoise ingesting sand. And as an added bonus the habitat is easy to sculpt. I firmly believe that it is of psychological benefit to the tortoises to be in an enviroment that seems natural, plus it makes a nice display in the home.
