Ticks live at any altitude that mamals live at.We do not deal with ticks too often around here(Kenosha Wis.).I have dealt with the American dog tick as well as the lime desease carring dear tick.In most cases it is best not to use tweesers to pull out the tick. It is better to either smother them with mineral oil or some even will use red hot tip of cigarett.

As far as your tort, we need to know what kind of tick it was to know if it is at risk. Try to recall its discription with a local pest control company or your univesity extention office. The health dept may even be of help. Once you know who,we can than know what, which leads to how,to control.

I will have to yeild this question to a better expert in your area. I do not have time tonite, but I will try to get some referances latter.

Good luck.

: HI,
: Someone recommended that I ask you the following question, she said you know about BUGS!
: Can and do you have knowledge of ticks ever hurting or bothering tortoises?
: We live at an altitude that should not have ticks, but I think I saw one the other day. Not sure, can't find it now and none of my animals have them. I did find something strange on my dog though (CAN TICKS BURROW UNDER THE SKIN?) I used tweezers to get it out (came out in smooched pieces - black and she didn't bleed until I got mostly all of it out and even then just a tiny bit) could have been a mole ... and I put her through that for nothing...(taking out just tissue) She didn't complain at all... but with seeing that tick, I was NOT taking any chances... She is scabbing up and it looks ok, but we keeping close eye on her. Could have just been a bug I saw (happened so quickly), but I am a worry wart... Now I am worried about my tort, check him all the time (nothing so far) Any advice? (oh by the way saw the bug out front and the tort is kept out back)
