Barron:
I have had several of these tortoises for several months. They are all doing well, though they are shy and it took a few days to get them all eating. Olaf Pronk from Madagascar provided some helpful info on temps:
Pyxis arachnoides brygooi:
Absolute max temp:Jan/Feb/Mar/Apr/May/etc.
104/108/104/102/99/95/95/95/95/90/101/104
Mean max temp:
92/89/89/89/84/81/80/83/86/87/91/
Absolute min. temp:
55/54/55/50/48/46/44/43/46/50/54/54
Mean precipitation
2.6/2.6/1.6/.2/.7/.04/.1/.1/.4/.6/1.5/1.8
These tortoises can handle higher temps than those listed, and seem most active in mid morning when temps here may already reach 100 degrees.
I will also add that mine laid eggs around June (don't have the exact date in front of me) which would be their normal winter. Once they become aclimated in the U.S I would guess they would lay eggs in Dec/Jan.
The arachnoides arachnoides seem to be the most active and friendly of the spiders, but I like them all!
Good luck,
Jerry
: I'm considering the purchase of a pair of this subspecies of spider tortoise. The literature available is sparse, to say the least. Please! Anything to help me make an educated purchase. Also - has anyone ever dealt with a dealer in the classifieds named "Justin M"? I'd like some references. Thanks!
