I agree with everybody here-- the first year you don't try to hibernate. After that it is up to you.
I have had Skippy for many years and have never purposefully hibernated him. During the winter months he stays in his indoor habitat kept at room temperature. He has a basking light if he wants to warm up. And if he is active he gets fed.
Last year, for whatever reason, he chose to go away from the basking light and to burry himself in some hay. From Dec. to Feb. he stayed under the hay. In March he came out and started to eat again. Everything seems Okay so I don't worry.
If you really want to hibernate your Russian, I can tell what I've been told by people I trust.
