It's really a personal choice about hibernating your new russian. I live in AZ and our winter temps range from high 30's to 40's. My russians hibernate from November through February. I'm lucky because I can keep them outside year round (with a little extra work in the summer to keep them hydrated). You're doing a great job asking questions and seeing a vet. Just my experience, but I hibernated my russians three months after I purchased them and they did fine. When giving advice to others, you always want to err on the side of caution so overwintering is recommended. See? It's a personal decision!
