: I am looking for advice on the best substrate to use for my Russian Tort's home. Right now I have some corn cob bedding that the pet store gave me. This doesn't seem right to me. I am new to this tortoise thing.

: Thanks

Corn cob substrate is not recommended because the tort can ingest this, and it can cause intestinal problems. NEVER USE CEDAR, it's toxic to torts. Russians love to burrow, try a mixture of 50% potting soil (use totally organic, make sure there are no fertilizers mixed into it or any of those little styrofoam balls) with 50% clean play sand (you can get this at HomeBase or any nursery). Also, for fun, buy a mini bale of timothy hay (available at PetSmart or equivalent). It's in the guinea pig aisle and it'll cost you about $4. Add this to your russian's setup and he'll burrow into it.
Good luck,
Kathy
