My redfoot was also shy when I first got him; just wanted to burrow and hide. I don't think you have anything to worry about just yet. Mine didn't come out of hiding voluntarily. I had to take him out and offer him food. 24 hours isn't really a long time for a tortoise to do without food. He is probably just nervous in his new surroundings. I'm sure he'll be fine. Make sure the temperature is within range, and try to offer him food again later. Keep us posted.

: Yesterday I bought a Little Russian. 24hrs later he has yet to eat. He has been hiding in his hide box and doesn't seem to want to come out. His vet appt. isn't for another week. I gave him a little soak last night. He appears to be in very good health according to all I have read. Is he just a little frightened? The little guy had me awake and dreaming about tortoises all night!!! Any advise would be greatly appreciated as he is my first tort.
