:It is best to get into the habit of sanitizing your hands and your children's hands after contact with your tortoise-- or any animal for that matter. Salmonella breeds in unsanitary conditions; such a the ponds used to breed aquatic turtles. It can also be found in land tortoises, and other reptiles to some extent. Just automatically assume that reptiles have it and take precautions.
I recommend some hand sanitizer- sometimes called waterless hand wash. It simply rubs into the hand and doesn't need to be rinsed off. Keep this easily available. Also never leave your children alone with your tortoise, constantly supervise them: otherwise you will have sick children and a wounded tortoise.
