This just came to mind!
Once again I don't want to alarm you Jen, or get you all worked up.
But, could you tell us how you house your russian tort, indoors or out?
If indoors can you describe your set up for us.
Do you have a temperature gradient, a warm side and a cooler side to the enclosure?
This is extremely important as the tortoise must be able to move away from the heat at will.
A thermometer in both ends of the enclosure will help ensure that the temps are correct.
If you are housing it in a fish tank, keep in mind that such a small mostly enclosed, glass tank can heat up very quickly.
Just one more thing to keep in mind, and worth mentioning as you are new to keeping torts.

Once again, I don't want to get you panicked, but the Pet Stores don't usually give out very good advise on care for torts. So I just wanted to cover all the bases here.
Terry.
