Hi Jen,
if a tortoise feels comfortable as the others mentioned it might sleep flat out like that. Or bask in the sun or under the Basking light in that position.
However as all the Russians in the stores right now are wild caught, I recommend a vet visit.
There might be absolutely nothing wrong with your tortoise, but if it hasn't seen a vet, then I recommend you take it ASAP.
Many of the newly imported Russians are infested with parasites, most commonly tiny pin worms.
Deworming if needed is easy, so a vet visit including a stool test will ensure that you catch any potential problems in the bud.
These wild caught tortoises have endured a lot before making it to a good home. The stress, temperature extremes and overcrowding they have had to endure can bring on all sorts of health problems.
A vet visit will ensure that your tortoise gets the best start in it's new home.
