But from the very beginning he was out going and apparently stress free-- definatly not shy. He also had no trouble adjusting to his diet. He tends to sample everything in his path, and Heaven forbid that he see anything even remotely looking at his food! He will run as fast as possible to get to the food dish first and he will guard it. You would think that he is starving!
I wouldn't recommend buying too young a tortoise most babies are very delicate, and need special care. A juvenile or an adult can handle a greater range of conditions, and are far more difficult to kill. But I don't think any really young Russians are available for sale, I've only seen sub-adult to adult Tortoises.
