I believe that Tortoises are among the "smartest"
reptiles, along the lines of a rat at least.
(Sorry, but to me dogs are fairly stupid and I've
had dogs before that won high obedience titles,
just my personal opinion of dogs.)
I think in the reptile arena, a King Cobra has a
keen intellect as well as a Komodo.
Most reptiles seem to be pretty "simple", like my
geckos (they don't seem to "know" or "recognize"
anything - about as bright as a box of rocks).
My tortoise on the other hand, recognizes me and
others, knows where his stuff is in the house
even in cabinets and in the refrigerator, knows
his way completely around the house inside and
out and location of all exits from either
side. He knows how to walk following me on the
street and remembers other places he's been to,
and is calm in his carrier in the car. He's
fairly bold with other people as long as I'm
around, thus suggesting his confidence in my
presence.
Finally I think some depends on how much time
and energy you spend with your pet, if they get
stimulating situations they will grow in their
experiences and intellect. Mine's really
interactive with me, and some of it is of course
breed specific boldness and "personality".
If you think your redfood recognizes you
(not as a parent, but a friend let's say OK!)
you're probably right, they are smart, I know
when I look into their eyes, most of them are
"there" behind the eyes. good luck with yours!
