Cedar, NO NO NO. Pine is ok, but may cause tummy problems if eaten. Alfalfa is not really recommended, partly because of its high protein content when ingested and also because it absorbs moisture from the tort. (Just learned that today!) How about timothy hay?? Or just regular hay? Timothy hay is real clean (not dusty like regular hay). You can find it at PetSmart (or equal) in the hamster aisle. A mini bale costs about $4 and it is a recommended food for sulcatas too.

: : Ok, i made a Walmart trip and all i could find for substrate was Cedar, Alfalfa, or Pine. Are any of these suitable for using in a Cage for a sulcata? Thanks, Tana.
: Pine..well maybe but I wouldn't recommend it because if the tort is young might eat it. Alfalfa I have used before crushed to the consistancy of oregano and worked good but I worry about the protein value in it. Cedar is a good way to kill your tort, don't use it. If it is a juvenile try rabbit pellets.
