i'd definately advise against either. walnut shells can cause problems if injested, and sand tneds to be too loose of a substrate for tortoises, as well as they will no doubt get huge mouthfulls of it when feeding. i use a thick layer of sphagnum peat moss (wet packed, then dried) covered with dried grass. you can also use alfalfa, though it can cause problems with young tortoises if injested as it can be rather sharp. please visit my peb site for more leopard tortoise info.
