You raise a really good point. The very scenario you posit happened to me last summer. A swampy lot on my street was actually purchased by someone who intended to spend a fortune on fill to build up the lot. The frogs that lived in the swamp were going to be buried alive, so I built a crude frog pond in my front yard and my neighbors and I relocated the frogs. But those were frogs. I suppose if they had been endangered tortoises I would have sought an injunction to stop the construction or called in experts to relocate the eggs. At the very least I would have read up on how to incubate the eggs BEFORE digging them up. But I suppose as a last resort, if the bulldozers were coming any minute now and there was no time to do any of those things, I may have just decided to move them. That conceded, even a day's notice would be time enough to find needed information, to hook up with experts, etc. I am aware that the last best hope for wild things is that people will care enough to take care of them, but "taking care" isn't easy. If you want to relocate wild animals, educate yourself, get your hands on some resources. If you're not doing it right, you're probably doing more harm than good. Those are my thoughts. You asked for them.

: Scenario, (in between looking for my redfoots), I see an area ready for leveling for a housing area. I take it apon myself to relocate animals/reptiles that I can find because I think they are doomed by the earthmovers. I know this may be against the wildlife laws and some people out there says let nature take care of nature but am I being righteous in my thinking that these species will be killed/covered up unless I intervene ? Or am I righteous to think I have the POWER to intervene ? Or am I righteous in thinking I MUST intervene ? Your thoughts please.

: : : So what are saying that because he was immature and only wanting to "protect" the eggs that it makes it right. I wonder what the chances are that these eggs will successfully hatch. According to the above post this is not the first incidence with this persons disrepect for what is right. I can honestly tell you right now that if we as the herpetological community do not police our own actions legislation will be drawn up that will control the way we keep herps. The legislation would more than likely being unfavorable to the herp keeper. (it usually is) Or it would totally prevent us from keeping certain herps or all herps together. It's food for thought!!!!
