with all the post (including me) about keeping tortoises outdoors I had the very unfortunate discovery of finding 2 of my redfoot juvies missing from their pen. This was in a time period of 6:00am to 11:00am. They were in a large rubber maid container with sloping sides and had been put out more than 20 times without any incidents. Since the ground was wet from this mornings dew I discoverd racoon tracks all around the pen. I would of never, ever thought a racoon would make off with toroises being in the size range of 5 and 6 inches. I live 60 miles south of K.C. and was home at the time so theft in the human form is out of the picture. So it appears racoons is the culprit here. I have gone out numerous times this morning with taping up long pants to my ankles and long sleeve shirts plus hat to battle with flies, mosquitos, ticks and thorned plants looking for these guys and will continue, but I feel I'm waisting my time. Has anybody heard of this happening before ? My regret will be not finding them and they not making it if they are still alive by the racoon dropping them. What makes the matter even worse we live on 10 acreas of woods, creeks, and hills with no neighbors around for 3/4 miles and our house is up for sale with my wifes transfer. Anyway if anybody is interested out there in my house and property and you decide you want to buy you may get some free redfoot tortoises. I'm just sick on this incident.
the very stupid Mike Chambers
