If as an example, you cut two pieces of tin foil off a roll. You cut one 12" x 12" and lay it flat. The other you cut 12" x 20" and you fold triangular peaks in it, like an accordian, enough so that the tin foil still fits within a 12" x 12" box. Piece number 1 has 144 in sq of surface area (surface exposed to the outside or in other terms, surface that you can physically touch). Piece number 2 has 240 in sq of surface area. It's why the heatsinks on your computer chips have fins. Much more surface area within a given set of linear parameters (the size of the chip) to help them cool faster.

: :I don't think that pyramiding increases the surface area of the shell. I think instead that a *normal* smooth shell has more surface area. But I'm still thinking this through, maybe I'll realize that I'm wrong, and then change my opinion accordingly.
