Why on earth would someone dig up eggs when he doesn't even know how to take care of them. You are correct. His action represents wanton disregard for the well-being of the species. I am very sad to learn this. I am also sad that the trade in wild caught torts is ongoing and seemingly booming. Is there any organized attempt to educate people about the harm they do when they perpetuate that trade?
: For those of you who do not know, the individual who posted below, asking for info on Gopherus egg incubation, illegally dug up a burrow and took the eggs. This has been an ongoing debate in the field collecting forum because he has been informed of the law, yet still chooses to disregard it. He has also inquired as to anesthetizing reptiles in order to keep from getting bit while handling them.
: The irresponsible and negligent acts of others affect the herpetological community as a whole, through negative publicity and increased legislation.
