Julie, you raise the perfect question in this context to reply that protein does not cause pyramiding. Most folks will agree that we do not know what causes pyramiding. All we (yes, I do have a mouse in my pocket) can do is provide as close a diet as we think it needs and adjust it if things are not turning out right. You cannot do any better than you are doing. Redfoots are one of the more difficult to keep in my eyes. That is because they are known opportunistic feeders as you have also indicated. There is very good documentation that they feed on carrion among other 'high protien' items. I believe this makes it difficult to strike a ballance but the set up you have is ideal. It provides a choice. If the tortoise 'feels' like having bugs it can. If it feels like greens it goes for it. If you provide a variety of both I can't see how you can run into an imbalance. Now all you have to do is to provide water, sunlight and heat in such a manor so that it may choose its optimal condition and you have the perfect wild caught looking animal. Simple. (hmmmmm)(maybe not)
