: : : :Humus is what some people call duff. It is organic matter that has broken down into dust much like peatmoss; compost is similar to humus except that it hasn't broken down as much. Humus generally holds more water and is great for water-loving acid tolerant plants.
Is it safe for tortoises? hat would depend on the species. I wouldn't recomend it for desert types- at least not without mixing sand with it. it will make the enclosure to humid. But for some of the forest tortoises it should work well. Find out if the soil has been sterilized, you don't want to add any creepy-crawlies to your tortoise's habitat.
