A.C. Highfield will use human research to back up many of his claims.Especially when no reaserch has been done on reptiles. If you look at the many studies on humans and calcium intake you will clearly see a link between too much calcium or even the wrong calcium having serious effects on the body.ther is a lot of discusion on what the right ratio of calcium to magnesium should be.You will typically see a two part calcium to one part magnesium. however eveidence id=s now showing that it should be the other way around. Two parts mag. to one part cal..

The reason is humans need magnesium to absorb cal.
If we cannot or do not get enough mag. we donot absorb or use the majority of the cal. we take in. then the body has to figure out what to do with this extra cal. So it stores it in non traditional areas. ie the soft tissue, arteries, muscle etc... This creats every thing from fibromialgia to cramps. includding cramps in the heart.

I give my tort a table spoon of organic apple cider vineger when ever I soak him. the malic acid and enzymes help maximise mineral absorption from the foods he is getting. This is diluted in about twenty ounces of filtered water.
Go to any good local healthfood store and ask for Braggs organic apple cider vinegar.
: :I agree with you on the trace elements. I think that most people over-supplament their reptiles. But I don't have any answers to how much is too much. I supplament about once a week and I use very little when I do. So far I haven't noticed any ill effects.
: I would be interested to find out if too much of the trace elements are harmfull. I have a sneaking suspicion that too much calcium can damage the tortoise but I have no proof to back it up.
