I had posted a thought earlier in the month stating that carbs (in the form of fiber) has a greater importance than the calcium protein ratio. There was one individual who disagreed.
This is why I think he either missunderstood me or is flat out wrong. If you feed your tort a diet high and protein and calcium only, it will die faster than if you fed it a diet high in fiber and low in protein with vertually no calcium. With out dietary fiber most animals cannot digest protein(the esential building block of life).Again this is why the Attkins diet works so well. You slowly starve your self to death(malnutrition). Internal organs fail, bones weaken(oseoperosis),immune system shut down etc... calcium deficientcy shows it self much slower ie;shell deformity, bone failure and eventual organ failure etc...
The reason I even bring this up is not to reduce the significance of calcium but to remind us all,the importance of a high fiber diet for our torts.I feel that ALL tortoise foods at the pet shops are junk!!!! If you rely on these foods your tort will die an early death, no matter how much you supl. with calcium.
If any one disagrees with me, please do more than say so. Show me proof and give me alternatives.
I am a betting man on this one.I would still wager that carbs are more important in the protein game.
