: Why are Russians sold by 2 or 3 at a time?
Some dealers are thinking of selling to customers with the idea of captive breeding, as eventually there will be a halt on wild collecting in most countries, or most species will become extinct from overcollection for human consumption (food) and the pet trade. You can get purchase a single Russian if you want from dealers. A basic breeding group is usually 1.2 or 1.3. In case you don't yet know the number system 1.1.1 means (1)male.(1)female.(1)juvenile-too-small-to-determine-gender. Some dealers selling rarer tortoises will sell only in pairs, trios, or larger established breeding groups. This is not yet the case with Russians. Good luck.
