In the case of Psammobates geometricus, and similar species, it is clear that the 'pyramiding' is genetic in nature, and is not related to diet. Even CB examples raised on natural graze within their natural habitat develop the 'bumps'.
This is definately your opinion. Because they were raised on natural graze does not imply all their nutritional requirements are met. Even wild populations of various tortoises show indications of nutritional imbalances. I'm (pretty) sure these animals feed on natural graze.
: As for how much damage MBD from dietary mismanagement causes. All one can usefully say is that it would tend to shorten life.
