split scutes occur during incubation. high incubation temperatures will often result in split scutes, and i feel that genetics have a little to do with it as well, though i have no conclusive information on this other than my own observation. all it means is that your tortoise isn't perfect in appearance. tortoises with multiple scutes will eat, breed and thrive just as well as those with normal scutes (but are almost always females). goos luck with your pancakes :)

: Hi again. I have already asked a couple of questions about my Pancake tortoise. Today I noticed that my adult tortoises have 13 scutes (without counting the outer ones, the ones that go all around the perimeter of the shell). Well, the baby has 15, 2 of the scutes are tiny. She has a different amount of scutes. What does this mean?
: THanks for any help.
