: It is almost impossible to provide the same foods as the tortoise would eat in the wild. There are many trace elements that are important for a healthy tortoise that aren't available in store-bought greens, or in your backyard.
In addition lettuces and their relatives loose half of their nutritional value mere hours after they have been picked, and they continue to loose there nutritional value every day after they have been picked. It seems prudent therefor to provide a suppliment to the food.
