Another pyramiding Q.

I recently acuired a 17" 40lb male Sulcata.
Even though the owner swares by diet he has for his tortoises, there is still some subtle pyramiding on some scutes. I now am putting him on the diet that a friend has used for years, and has a perfect looking tortoise. I am wonering if any one has actually seen a young adult smooth out (so to speak)?
Any words of encouragement would be great!!
