:Just because an animal is born and raised in the wild (away from human interference) doesn't necessarily mean it is in good health. Pyramiding occures in captive bred and wild caught, and I would assume that the associated problems that go along with pyramiding would apply to both groups.
As for protein shortening the life span of a tortoise it would be almost impossible to predict how many years the life span had been shortened.
First; very few people have ever had a tortoise from hatchling to old age. We just don't have all the data in yet.
Second; it is like smoking or heavy drinking, we all know that these pastimes can lead to a shortened life span, but there are cases where a person who had smoked for his/her entire life still lives a long life and dies from natural causes. I don't think it would be wise to say go ahead and smoke or drink all you want there is a chance you'll survive.
High protein has been shown to cause some internal organ dammage to herbivorus animals. The ramifications of this is still being studied.
