I was hoping someone would pick up on this.
I found an actual explaination for the reasoning behind the warming. Tortoises digest their food primarily by acid base digestion (as all vertebrates) Acid production in reptiles is partially temperature dependent. Increase temperature in addition to the presence of food leads to increase acid production. The acid in addition to breaking down the food prevents putrification or rotting of the food in the stomach which can lead to other problems.
As it has been mentioned on more than one occasion tortoises including grazers are pretty opportunistic feeders which is why the above makes sense.
