Perlite is not good for any animal to eat. Same
thing with vermiculite. These are soil additives
to lighten and increase moisture holding qualities
of potting/garden soils. DO NOT let your tort
around the perlite and don't let him eat that mess.
They're usually white, small round things look
like styrofoam or something.
Can you replace the soil with fresh "clean" soil
that doesn't have this added to it?
As far as everything Terry told you about eating
pebbles and calcium, it's all correct. As far
as your gardening situation, change it or don't
let him graze there. niki
