I'm glad you're feeling good about your tort. It was a russian, right? So, he must be at least 4" now. They grow fairly slow, so he'll probably be very close to the size he is now by the time you move. A kiddie pool's great--just don't pile anything by the edges because russians are great escape artists! I don't know what kinds of birds you have, but I'd be wary of anything that could possibly pick up a small tort (hawk, seagull). If your guy is at least 4" he's a bit safer than a smaller guy, but still be careful. I'm assuming ants could be very harmful if he got on of their hills. Flies shouldn't be of concern unless he has a wound. It sounds like you're enjoying him alot and learning more and more all the time. That's the fun part!
