Hi, I posted a couple of question messages on 7/3/2000 and I wanted to say THANKS to all who responded. The information I received was invaluable!!
I don't know about the camping thing yet, I would make one of those devices that Giovanni described -- sounds great and I would call the campground about pesticides -- If I did take him... However for the time being, I am just going to get to know him.
Want you to know that I got him a bigger (Reptarium) and have made him a make-shift area with rocks hiding places, logs and dandelion weeds in the back yard... Right now he can only go there when someone can watch him... No matter what I do - he seems to find a way out. We are moving soon (within the next 6 months, so I don't want to build or dig anything extravagant until we do... gotta sell the house... Also I have a kids pool with a hide log, small dish of water and Rocks. He tries to get out of that too... but so far he can't -- so if I am busy and can't watch him - that is where he goes. Right now, at night (bedtime) he goes in that Aquarium (I was wrong it is a 20 gal) and he seems to like that just fine. Sometimes I have to wake him up in the morning to go outside and eat. I got some great ideas from people with tortoises on how they house them. He is small right now, and I don't know how fast they grow... but he will have a more appropriate home when we move. (inside and out) As for the vet... hasn't gone yet, but I contacted one today to make sure they are reptile certified (familiar??) Anyway they are to call me back today. If not, I will find one that is. Has anyone had any problems with their Torts outside (like with birds, squirrels or BUGS (flies??) If so, what do you do. I do know one thing, He has a much better life than at that pet store.... and my husband thinks I am a fanatic - but he is learning. THANKS AGAIN!
