:Hi: last year my russian tortoise (Skippy) started to show signes of what I thought to be shell rot. The scutes on the back looked like they were pulling away from the marginals. I thought I could see bone getting exposed. I was pretty freaked by this.
It turns out that there was no problem. Russian tortoises grow in bursts, what I was seeing was new bone and shell making a new growth ring on him. The new bone and shell is a beautiful cream color.
I still recomend that you take your tortoise to the vet and get a checkup, have him test for parasites, and get his opinion of what is going on with his shell.
