The only thing similar I have heard of is that in extreme cases of shell rot bacteria can get between the outer layer and inner layer of the carapace and can destroy the soft layer in between. It can end up with a discoloration of the scutes and an undercutting and separation. The most common area for this is in the rear area of a female's carapace. I'm not saying that this is what is wrong with your tortoise and it is good that you are taking her to a Vet.
