:Could the crack actually be the hinge? On the back of a hingeback right where the shell is curving down there is a hinge. this hinge allows the top shell to be closed at the rear in order to protect the animal from attack.
And- the little silvery bugs could be mites. I don't think reptile mites can harm a human (but I'm not sure). But they can definately cause harm to the tortoise. Like everybody else has said- take you pet to a vet for a check-up.
