have you tried diatomacious earth? It's like a powdery dust that you can put down around the outside of your yard, and dump small amounts on ant hills. It kills them and keeps them away. Shallow dishes of citrus oil also bait and kill them, without danger to animals. Ants are vicious and a turtle or tortoise has little defense against them. I make sure to get rid of them as soon as possible when I find them.
