: I am seeing posts about people who have a tortoise hatchling, just one, no mention of having bred the tortoise themselves I am wondering where to get a small tortoise? Preferably a baby.

Hi Theresa,

You may want to check out the breeder boards here on Kingsnake, or if you let me know where you live I may be able to forward a source to you. I wouldn't buy one from a pet store because you will probably be paying much more for it and you will have no one to talk to regarding the husbandry of the particular animal. What you want is a cb (captive bred) tortoise. Please do your homework on what eventual size you are comfortable with, and how it would thrive in the weather in your area ( i.e., humidity, Dry conditions). Then consider housing arrangements such as indoor enclosure, outdoor enclosure, UVB lighting and heat. Just make sure you know what your getting into is all I can say for your own benefit. If you like you can email me privately for some building spec's on an indoor tort enclosure you can put together for around 50 to 70 dollars, depending upon how creative your looking to get. Good luck to you.

Ciao'

Giovanni
