Luck. You probably started with a very small gene pool that contain the high red color by chance. Particularly if the animals are in a controled environment where predation is minimized. That trait could have been 'locked in' so to speak. Thats my WAG. There are good references in the Society for the Study of Amphibians and Reptiles (SSAR) Catalogue of Amphibians and Reptiles. They just published an up to date account on Redfoots that is packed with References including a range map that should surprise anyone with an interest in redfoots.
