When I handle my tortoises, which include some 30lb leopards, I place the tortoise on my knee (centered on the plastron) I take my thumb and middle finger and first check the mussle development around the neck bone. This gives me a good indication of muscle mass. Then I gently hold the head with the middle finger and thumb while at the same time gently open the lower jaw to see inside the mouth.(checking the tongue color and what ever else.) I do this starting with hatchlings and continue as the tortoise grows. This allows me to condition the animals not to withdraw and even to allow me to open the mouth. This has to be done slowly and patiently. Over time the animal trusts you and allows you to do this so if there ever is a need to medicate it is quick and traumaless.
