Baytril as mentioned earlier used to be a very strong antibiotic
and still is for the most part. Cases of resistance have been reported
to show up. That is why it is suggested by most of the herp vets I know
that this drug be used as a last line of defence unless of course you
can afford to have the complete diagnostiscs and cultures ($200.00 min in
SO CA) for starters. Baytril(Enrofloxicine) is also very caustic
when injected. It has long (as long as it's been used in the herp
hobby) been known to cause severe tissue damage particularly in snakes. Not
to mention it appears to be down right very (very) painful to the
animal.(as demonstrated by the animal walking around on three legs(as in the case of a tortoise)
and pitifully hobbleing around until I guess the drug dissapates or
whatever. Either way it looks painful. This is why vets are trying
to administer this drug (BAYTRIL)(and only baytril that we are talk
about now) orally. Oh. One other thing. Baytril also comes in a pill
form. What the difference is between this and the injectable for is
I don't know but there has been incedences reported by other tortoise
keepers that their tortoises have had some bad reactions(foaming at the
mouth and gagging) to the pill
form. The vets who use Baytril orally suggest the injectable form
given orally for this reason.
(I think that covers it)
(Believe it... or Not)
