Hi Brandon,
Emydura Mcquarie (correct spelling Macquarrii)is commonly known as the Murray River Turtle.

Is this the species you have?
Or do you have
Emydura signata: Breisbane short necked turtle.
Emydura victoriae: Victoria short necked turtle.
Emydura subglobosa: Red- bellied short necked turtle.

If they are subglobosa ( the only one of the five species common in the pet trade) they are primarily aquatic although they enjoy basking and also require a land area.
And the diet same as for omnivores . Fish, trout chow, veggies, fruits and aquatic plants, earthworms, crickets, mussels and snails.
From Australia, a tropical species that doesn't hibernate.Although as it's ilegal to export them from Australia imports come in from New Guinea.
The Red Bellied short necked turtle (Emydura subglobosa)is quite common in captivity now so I suspect this might be the species you have.

Your post confused me as you say they are tortoises not turtles??
If so then you may be talking about a whole different species.

If they are aquatic turtles not tortoises, I would try Kingsnakes Turtle Forum for more info.

Terry.
