Think about it. In the wild, they encounter carrion, or droppings from other species rather infrequently. With carrion, it is taking advantage of a rare opportunity - which may not happen again, for months, years, or a lifetime. With droppings, again, these contain a wide variety of trace elements (also pathogens) - it is 'programmed' into them to use what it is there... to maximise survival prospects in a harsh environment.
