:It's not that protein causes pyramiding-- It's growth of the animal exceding its abilty to utilize essential vitamins and minerals. Even a tortoise whose growth has been stunted do to a completely inadequate diet can have a pyramided shell if it has been deprived of calcium. Protein just happens to be the most obvious of the contributing factors.
Excessive protein- it has been suggested- may contribute to various problems in the internal organs (Fatty liver etc.). Unfortunatly tortoises have a long life span so it is difficult to say just how shell deformities or protein intake will affect the animal in it's old age.
The responsible thing is to try to feed the animal foods as close to its natural food as possible. And the goal should be the health and wellfare of the tortoise not how big you got your animal.
