: First off where does one start when trying to gather info on an animal.
This forum is a good start for the widely kept pet type tortoises like sulcata, Russian, Redfoot, etc. This is a great place to go for a beginner, where helpful people like you, Terry, and Marissa can give sound advise. However, a spider is not a beginner tortoise. Doing independent research and more species specific breeders/keepers forums is where I would go.

: Second, how about just a little more specifics as to how and why they are difficult to keep or some kind of reference that might actually help with their care without judgement on if it is ethical or not.

Little is known about what they eat in the wild and the natural conditions are difficult to replicate.
This is purely second hand info that I have not researched, but a breeder on another list said that estivation is a challenge, egg binding is common in captives and egg incubation is a challenge as well.

This is where I would start...Victor's studbook programme

Then I'd get the books he has cited on his Literature page.
